Q1: sandbox liner - does it clip into the sides of the box, or just lay on the ground ?

You need to lay the landscape fabric down on the ground. Assemble the sandbox on top of of the landscape fabric and when you are pushing the stakes through the 4 corners that will hold the landscape fabric in place. You can then trim the landscape fabric from around the sandbox.
